You’ve seen it on Instagram. Your gym has started hosting it. But what actually is HYROX?
If you’ve been anywhere near the Northern Ireland fitness scene in the past year, you’ll have seen HYROX mentioned. It’s on Instagram, it’s in gyms, and people who do it talk about it with the kind of enthusiasm usually reserved for people who’ve just discovered coffee. So what is it, and does the hype match the reality?
HYROX in 60 Seconds
HYROX is a global fitness competition format that combines running with functional fitness exercises. The structure is always the same: eight 1km runs, each followed by one functional exercise station. The exercises are ski erg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.
It’s run the same way in every country. The times are comparable across events. It’s essentially athletics for the gym obsessed. It’s structured, measurable, and yes, there is a leaderboard.
What Does HYROX Training Actually Look Like?
You don’t need to enter a competition to benefit from HYROX training. The exercises that feature in HYROX, rowing, sled work, ski erg, functional carries, are excellent general fitness tools regardless of whether you ever compete.
A typical training week for someone preparing for HYROX might look like:
- 2 running sessions: One steady-state, one interval-based
- 2 strength/functional sessions: Focusing on the HYROX exercise movements
- 1 combined session: Practising transitions and sustained effort
The Kit You Need
Here’s where it gets practical. The equipment used in HYROX competitions is specific, and training with the right kit makes a genuine difference.
- Ski Erg: The SkiErg from Concept2 is the competition standard. It trains the upper body and core in a way almost nothing else does. Available from us in-store.
- Rowing Machine: The Concept2 RowErg is used at every HYROX event globally. If there’s one piece of HYROX equipment worth investing in, it’s this.
- Sleds: We stock a range of training sleds suitable for garage and gym use. Push sled work is genuinely one of the best conditioning tools available.
- Wall Balls, Sandbags, Kettlebells: The accessory kit. We carry a full range in-store, and they’re priced accessibly.
Do You Need to Compete?
No. HYROX training is excellent general fitness training regardless of whether you ever enter an event. But if you’re competitive by nature, the structured format of an actual event is genuinely motivating. Events are held across the UK and Ireland, and worldwide if you fancy an overseas trip.
